Latvia becomes part of the European network of artificial intelligence factories

Latvia is among the 13 European Union countries that have received support for the implementation of a national-level initiative for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) capacities and competences. The implementation of the project “AI Factory Antenna — Latvia, AIFA-LAT” from 2026 to 2028 will strengthen Latvia's position in the European digital and innovation space.

The initiative is being implemented with the support of the European Commission and EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and aims to establish a national competence centre that will strengthen the Latvian AI ecosystem and connect it with the Finnish-led LUMI AI Factory consortium. This will provide Latvia with access to European-level supercomputing power, support for algorithm development and AI skills development opportunities.

The project is implemented by Riga Technical University (RTU) in cooperation with the University of Latvia, Centre for Cultural Information Systems, State Agency for Digital Development, Latvian Association of Artificial Intelligence (MILA), Latvian Information Technology Cluster and Artificial Intelligence Centre.

The role of MILA in the project

The Latvian Association of Artificial Intelligence represents the national AI industry and entrepreneurs, providing links between science, business and society. MILA's task is to promote the implementation of practical AI solutions in Latvian companies, to help attract the private sector to the project and to promote the possibilities of the Latvian AI ecosystem at the European level.

The Association participates in the strengthening of the ecosystem and the development of competences, promoting cooperation between the public and private sectors, as well as promoting the application of AI in language technologies, health data analytics, cybersecurity and energy.

MILA also acts as a collaboration platform for companies wishing to take advantage of the new infrastructure opportunities, including testing and implementing AI solutions, participating in trainings and international projects.

This project marks an important milestone in the development of Latvian AI — it strengthens our scientific and industrial capacity, creates new opportunities for cooperation and helps Latvia become an integral part of the European artificial intelligence ecosystem.
